The Riddle of the Light Switches - Think Out the Box

You have been placed with a task that once executed would prove that your logic is sound and your abilities of thinking outside the box are outstanding.

In a room you are faced with the choice of three light switches on a wall, you are told that only one light switch switches on a bulb in the room opposite. You are unable to see the light in the other room and the task only enables you to go into the room once where you will find out whether you have correctly identified the correct light switch.

You approach solving this problem by looking a the nature of light bulbs and light switches:
If you leave a light bulb on for a length of time it will become hot to the touch.
A light switch has two positions, that being on and off.

A simple google search will probably warrant the answer to this riddle, however it is hoped that you were able to work this out without the aid of a search engine.
